That’s when students start forgetting their voting cards or not holding one up when asked (there is no accountability other than the instructor noticing you’re not participating.) In a big class, it’s hard to keep up the enthusiasm without with the instructor having a powerful presence in the room.

That said, I know of many instructors who use ABCD cards with amazing success. They’re all graduates of the Center for Astronomy Education Tier 1 and Tier 2 workshops, often lead by Ed Prather. He defines “classroom presence” for me! Anyone interested in effective peer instruction should consider taking one of the CAE workshops. And then take it again!
