Teaching Assistant Development Program (TADP)

CTD Home > CTD Programs > Teaching Assistant Development Program (TADP)

UCSD requires that all TAs receive training in teaching. CTD provides workshops, observations, classroom videotaping, and confidential feedback, evaluation, and consultation.

In cooperation with the academic departments, a campuswide prequarter training workshop is provided, supplemented by ongoing assistance throughout the first quarter that a TA teaches. All services are available to continuing and experienced TAs. In addition, thematic workshops are offered each quarter on a variety of topics.

The resources and services of CTD (books, journals, newsletters, assistance with portfolio preparation, etc.) are available to all TAs on campus as well as interested faculty. Each new TA receives a copy of the CTD handbook*. CTD staff members also participate with departments in designing discipline-specific workshops and seminars (one-time or series).

TADP Workshops

CTD offers training, departmental and thematic workshops.

Training:
A campuswide comprehensive training is offered before classes start in the fall. All new teaching assistants are invited to participate in several sessions designed to introduce them to university teaching. Training topics include:

  • the TA's instructional role
  • what constitutes good teaching
  • how to establish positive learning situations
  • classroom management
  • how to facilitate problem-solving, discussion, lab, and studio sections
  • the process of evaluation and grading
  • resources for teaching
  • issues of sexual harassment, ethics, and diversity

Departmental:
CTD staff participate with departments in designing discipline-specific workshops and seminars (one-time or series). In addition to the campuswide training, departments may request workshops each quarter for new TAs as well as mid-quarter workshops for new and continuing TAs.

Thematic:
To provide ongoing training throughout the academic year CTD offers a selection of specialized workshops each quarter. All graduate students and faculty receive workshop schedules and are encouraged to attend.
